The
River Eo marks the natural frontier between the communities
of Asturias and Spain’s most north-westerly region,
Galicia. After a long journey of 87 km., and as it passes
by the village of Vegadeo it opens out into an estuary which
is 800 metres wide. The Eo estuary is an area which has been
declared “Wetland of International Importance”
under the Ramsar Convention, “Partial Nature Reserve”
and “Important Bird Area” (IBA). Bathed by the
Eo are the villages of Castropol, Figueras (western Asturias)
and Ribadeo (eastern Galicia).
